The Right Honourable Tan Sri Datuk Amar Lee Hun Hoe

Born in Alor Star, Kedah on 27 September 1925, the Right Honourable Tan Sri Datuk Amar Lee Hun Hoe was brought to Sarawak in 1926 by his parents. He received his primary and Secondary education in Sarawak, and after leaving school in 1948 he joined the Government service.


He was awarded a Colonial and Development Fund Scholarship to study law at the University of Southampton from 1951 to 1955 where he obtained B.A. (Laws) (Hon). In early 1956, he was called to the Bar at Lincoln’s Inn. After obtaining a Post Graduate Certificate from the Council of Legal Education, London, he returned to Sarawak. From 1956 to 1965 he was with the Judicial Department as Stipendiary Magistrate. He had also acted as Crown Counsel, Deputy Public Prosecutor and Registrar. From 1962 to 1964 he was also appointed Chairman, Advisory Committee under the Preservation of Public Secutiry Ordinance (Sarawak). On various occasions he was also appointed Judicial Commissioner whenever a High Court Judge was not available. On 17 May 1965, he was elevated to the Bench of the High Court in Borneo. Shortly, thereafter he was appointed as Chairman of the Royal Commission of Inquiry to look into the Practice and Administration of the Seremban Town Board. In 1967, he was nominated to hear election petitions in Sabah. On 30 August 1967, he was posted to Sabah as resident Judge. He was appointed the Chief Justice of Borneo on 1 January 1974. His Lordship held that office until his retirement on 31 December 1990. His Lordship had the distinction of being the longest serving Chief Justice of the High Court in Borneo.
