The Right Honourable Tan Sri Dato’ Ismail Khan was born in Taiping, Perak on 18 June 1905 and received his early education at the King Edward VII School and later at the St. George’s School, Taiping where he matriculated in January 1923.
After matriculation he joined the King Edward VII Medical College, Singapore; but left the College in June the same year to proceed to England in 1924 to join the University College, London and the Middle Temple. He graduated from the London University in June 1927 and was called to the Bar in January 1928. On his return to Malaya, he joined the firm of Mr. N. Raghavan at Penang and practised until the outbreak of war. After Japanese Occupation he went to Alor Star and resumed practice until his elevation to the bench. His Lordship was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court in 1958 and served first in Kuala Lumpur and later was judge for Negri Sembilan and Malacca. His lordship’s was appointed the Chief Justice of Borneo on 2 September 1968, an office which he held until his retirement on 31 December 1973.
